386：32 位元與快取記憶體
Intel 的 80836 是第一款採用 32 位元架構的 x86。這顆處理器提供數種版本。其中最知名的兩款是擁有 16 位元資料匯流排的 386 SX (單字組 eXternal),，以及具備 32 位元資料匯流排的 386 DX (雙字組 eXternal)。不過其他兩個版本也值得一提：SL 是提供快取 (外部) 管理功能的第一款 x86，以及用於太空計畫 (哈伯望遠鏡使用這顆處理器) 的 386EX。
